TREASURES – PART 3
There is a beautiful story in Luke 7 about a woman who had lived a hard life, ravaged by sin, and cast out by the community. She had heard that Jesus was having dinner in a nearby house, and brought Him a costly and beautiful jar of perfume. Instead of giving the perfume to Him, she poured it out onto His feet, washing and anointing them. She then wiped His feet clean with her hair.
The perfume is believed to have been worth a year's wages. WHAT?! Can you imagine spending all that you earned in a whole year on a jar of perfume that you pour on someone's feet?
But such was her love and thankfulness for Jesus and what He had done (and would do) for her. A woman scorned was now accepted, forgiven and dignified.
A jar of perfume that she may have sold or kept for herself was poured out in an incredible gesture of love, humility and thankfulness. What she might have once treasured in and of itself, was now used to show the true treasure of her heart.
What do you spend your life on? What do you pursue and store up in your heart? In your cupboards? In your house? What is in your open hands extended out to the world?
At Christmas and on birthdays I give my children gifts because I love them. I love seeing their beautiful faces light up with joy as they unwrap their gifts. They are my treasure and I plot and plan ways I can bless them. And because I love them, I want them to know that our love, our treasure, our hope does not reside in gifts that they unwrap. They’re just a tool, a representation and a way of expressing my love for them.
A meaningful life is not one that has a house full of things or a bank account full of money. It’s a life that knows forgiveness and compassion, stores up hope, and is poured out in love for others… Where things and money are tools to help, bless, regenerate, protect and nurture life’s true gifts… each-other.
