And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?” Genesis 3:11 (NKJV)

Consumers – Part 2 – Busy

Go to PART 1

God says to Adam after they’d eaten the forbidden fruit “ who told you you were naked?”

I’m pretty sure it was meant to be rhetorical. But when you look at it more closely and dig a little deeper it reveals something more powerful.

Adam and Eve’s only awareness of themselves would’ve come from God. Their sense of ‘self' came from the Divine.

Where does your sense of self and worth come from? Is it a dress you purchased at a boutique store or the latest smart watch available from the current world-leading tech company?

I’m not adverse to nice things. I like dressing and feeling good about myself but when those things come at the expense of being still and knowing that He is God, I find it hard to have genuine peace in my life. Peace that comes from knowing who I am and that I am completely loved, independently of anything I have, I am or can do.

Having stuff also sends us on a pursuit. The pursuit is to get more stuff and protect the stuff we already have. It makes us busier than we ought to be.

What’s the first response you get from people when you ask how they are? Busy… right?

It’s like busyness is the next must-have, newfangled thing; like being busy and ensuring it’s obvious gives us a sense of status.

But busyness steals our time for the sake of temporal things. And at the foundation of busy you'll find fear. Fear of missing out or losing what we have.

Jesus sums it up well:

“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body… Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? …If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?”
