And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance. Romans 5:3 (NKJV)
Daily Brew – Part 2 – Brewing Under Pressure
Working for a Specialty Coffee roaster, Glee Coffee Roasters, I deal mostly with the ‘espresso' brewing method. You would be familiar with this if you drink lattes or cappuccinos since it’s the method used for brewing the coffee portion of these drinks.
The word espresso gets its origins from the same word ‘expressly’ and as opposed to pre-brewed coffee, espresso is typified by making the coffee expressly to order for the drinker.
Espresso also derives its meaning from the word ‘pressed.' Unlike filter coffee or pour-over methods, espresso typically puts 9 bars of pressure (9 times atmospheric pressure) over the ground coffee as it’s brewing.
This pressure method amplifies all the flavours of the coffee making it taste richer, sweeter and fuller than a typically brewed coffee where there is very little pressure placed on it.
Check out Romans 5:3-4 “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
It’s kinda like this verse is saying that we should glory in pressure because it will amplify full and rich flavours in our life.
But pressure sucks and for the most part, we want to avoid it as much as possible!
In reality pressure helps us see light and shade, bringing contrast and clarity to what can seem like a mundane existence. It can help us become aware of where we don’t usually have tension and spur us on to a life of gratitude and thankfulness.
Famous Basketball champ, Robert Horry says, “Pressure can burst a pipe or make a diamond” but I’d like to add, “or make some sweet, sweet coffee!” Haha… but seriously hard times, trials and pressure are not something God sends to you BUT they are something God can use in you. If these testing times are handled with a growth mindset, they will produce a sweetness and bigness in you that a life without pressure can never make!
We can glory in pressure, for it gives us the opportunity for a fuller and richer life.
And we can celebrate when coffee is placed under pressure, because it makes it taste amazing 😉
