There is no way, God, that I’ll drink this! This isn’t mere water, it’s their life-blood—they risked their very lives to bring it! 2 Sam 23:17 (MSG)
Part 2 – Poured Out

And they followed that man of hope, that man of vision, of purpose and humanity with all they had. And soon enough their hearts soothed and their minds became calm and focused. A strange redemption came with this man they now called king, and they owed their sane selves to his life's call.
So when their king dreamed out loud of the cool, calm waters of peace and refreshment found only at a certain well he used to frequent as child, The Three had decided to do all they could to bring it to their leader. Not just to appease his thirst, but to calm his spirit. Just as his songs and poetry had calmed theirs a million times over.
As the sun caught their heels, they arrived back at the cave. The skin of water had dripped some along the way but was still full. Without saying a word, Josheb approached his king, his general and leader and handed it over to him.
The Three had poured themselves out all night long to give this gift as an offering to the man who had rescued them, who had poured himself out for the sake of the nation, for them. Their king took one look at the skin of water and his eyes filled with warms tears. They moved slowly from the water to them and he gazed at their clothes wet with sweat and blood, their knives covered with sticky red. Cuts on their faces, bruises to their arms, flesh missing from their legs… The tears fell. All at once, what was but a memory of the well at Bethlehem, the distant sense of hope and purpose, of peace and strength, came flooding back. Their king knew they would make it, they would all make it. There was much to do and this cave would not be their home for much longer.
David lifted his face to the heavens and cried in a loud voice, “There is no way, God, that I’ll drink this! This isn’t mere water, it’s their life-blood—they risked their very lives to bring it!” (2 Sam 23:17) And just as The Three had poured out their love for him in the retrieval of this water… just as he, David, had poured out his life for the sake of the kingdom, he poured this water, that was more than water, upon the earth as an offering to God, the Divine. The Three lifted their heads in humble honour, knowing that this water was not wasted in this way but was given a higher office of merely satisfying a desire.
Their sacrifice had made it sacred.
Just as his had made them.
Something they never thought they could be.
