But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 (NIV)
There’s a difference between observing light and walking in light. Imagine yourself sitting in the shade on a spring afternoon. You’re watching someone stand in the sun and soak up the warmth it creates. When you shield yourself from it you miss out on its benefits even though you’re so close to being under its rays. The same thing can happen to Christians. We’ll talk about Jesus, we fully believe in Jesus BUT we fail to walk in Jesus. To us, He’s a good idea but can be a daunting example to walk out. So close yet missing out.
That’s why it’s a “faith walk”. Walking in the light of Jesus means that we have to let go of our old ways of thinking. Guilt and shame are non-existent in God’s economy, but it’s often out of these things that we judge and ridicule others. The shame hiding beneath the surface causing us to be insecure about who we really are (FYI you REALLY are the righteousness of Christ – 2 Cor 5:21) and therefore we subconsciously and consciously pull others down and judge based on external appearances.
When you walk in His light you can’t help but believe that you are righteous in Him. A sense of confidence about who you are comes upon you…not about what you’ve done but about what He’s done for you! This confidence creates a sense of humility and compassion because you see yourself as once broken but now made perfect in Him. Then you look at the brokenness of others and realise they too can be perfect in Jesus. In fact, they have been made perfect, but like an un-wrapped present, may not have opened it yet!
This is your opportunity. Not to judge but to encourage others to get out into the light where His warmth will bring confidence and restoration. Strength and a true sense of worth. Today, walk in the light, the ways of Jesus.
Like this verse says it will purify you and cause you to live in wholeness and treat others with the same value.
